Being Let Go

&lt;p>Today signifies the end of a notable phase in my career. It's been a journey of ups and downs, yet I believe each step has shaped who I am now.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>The departure from my latest role is bittersweet. While it's sad to say goodbye, I choose to cherish the valuable experiences and insights I've gathered there. From mastering project management to cultivating resilience amidst adversity, every instance has been pivotal to my personal development.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>Initiatives like Truthcasting and Saltshaker Media transcended mere assignments; they were platforms for growth and introspection. Saltshaker Media, especially, resonated with a personal cause, and despite intermittent struggles, I take pride in our three-year impact.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>Looking back, I value the intricate balance between guidance and independence. The trials of micro-management, though sometimes vexing, have enlightened me on adaptability and the significance of equilibrium in the workplace.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>With this chapter concluding, a myriad of opportunities awaits. I am thrilled by the prospect of discovering a role that better matches my goals and principles. The path forward is uncharted, but with the knowledge acquired thus far, I remain hopeful.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>To new beginnings, a grateful nod to the past, and anticipation for the future's promise!&lt;/p>

Being laid off is never easy, but it's all part of life's journey. In this journal entry, I reflect on the challenges and joys of the past three years, as well as my aspirations for the future.

Slump

&lt;h1 style="text-align: center;">Whats Happened Since?&lt;/h1>
&lt;p>In my last blog post i was working on finishing up my e-commerce page. I was frantically working on a way to implement a categorization system that would work well. Initially i wanted that categorization to be an Object that tied the product to that category, however i settled on a much simpler solution, as i was able on the back-end in the server to create the methods necessary for association, i was not able to do Object relations on the front-end, especially with multiple categories.&nbsp;&lt;/p>
&lt;p>I finished the whole setup for that page, at least, i've finished it enough that i no longer want to put any more time into development hours, the &lt;a title="Morristown TCG" href="https://morristowntcg.herokuapp.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">final project&lt;/a> became a place where i can host my collection of Poke'mon TCG Cards, A hobby of which that is pretty popular around me, I didnt need to modify the codebase much to make this a fluent finish to the end of this project from where i started, the biggest challenge in doing this was seeding the Database with cards. If i were to pursue this project further i would want to specialize a Card object specifc enough to the TCG (The Card Game) that i can add more information in for each card. For example, i would add fields to differentiate the different rarities for the cards themselves, some common cards have Holo and Reverse Holo variants, at this time the only way to differentiate which card in my store you're looking at is through the name of the card itself. However i dont anticipate making these changes, or at the very least making these changes anytime soon. It's a nice pet project but its much to personal, and the market is extremely competitive, meaning its a lot of work for not really any pay-off, though, i enjoyed the work i've done on it so far.&lt;/p>
&lt;h2 style="text-align: center;">How things Have been Going...&lt;/h2>
&lt;p>We arrive at the moment i start to detail the personal failings and feelings i've had going on, I dont really have a project im working on at the moment, and im reluctant to start one. Why? im not really sure. I've burnt myself out really, My team and I have been working the last several months on a rebuild of a once popular product known as &lt;a title="Truthcasting" href="https://start.truthcasting.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Truthcasting&lt;/a> A really wonderful web-application designed to help church's broadcast their message of faith. As the project lead, i've spent many an hour pouring over the code of my colleagues mostly performing a sort of QA task, ensuring that the code we put together will function how we want it to. Ive been really successful in this, but i feel like a lot of the hours i've spent in this project have led me to a sort of funk. As i stated earlier, i have no personal project on-going even though i have a few ideas of what i want to build. I dont quite yet feel like pulling that proverbial "trigger". I've spent a lot of my decompression time doing rather meaningless things like Gaming, and watching Anime (Currently bingeing One-Piece). To be honest, it only adds to that feeling of uselessness doing these activites, because while i am decompressing and trying to enjoy myself, i feel as if im wasting time when i could be doing something more useful. Like learning, and futhering my knowledge and understanding of Software Development, which only leads me further into the pit of despair.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>What i want to do, mostly is take a break from programming and development all-together, and do things outside the day to day work, I spend a lot of time at my computer, and i want to get up and actually do activities. I've gained 20 pounds since becoming a Software Developer, and the extra weight (being that i was already extremely overweight) is taking its toll on me mentally and physically.&nbsp;&lt;/p>
&lt;p>I feel like my funk will be rectified when and if I can find activities to do that are not programming, and are more or less physical activites that i can enjoy.&nbsp;&lt;/p>
&lt;p>Regardless funk or not, I try to stay somewhat sharp on development by devoting at least 2 hours a week to programming learning. Even if i dont do much in that time, its better than nothing. Currently, Im learning a new language setup to create desktop applications using the language electron. Its a super interesting language built around the normal HTML/JS/CSS that most web developers know, but it has the added benefit of a working desktop application, and not simply a web application. Allowing a developer such as myself the ability to tackle problems from a slightly different view point.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>Hopefully in future blogs, ill have more information about what i find most useful coming out of electron, it would be easy to write that its becoming a quickly popular way to build desktop applications, (a popular app like Slack, is built on electron) but what im most interested in is how can i leverage it to tackle a problem.&nbsp;&lt;/p>

Its been a hot minute since, i last blogged, some things have happened, but ultimately... Im in a slump.

Continued work on the e-comm

&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; So, before my last article I detailed out the problems I was facing with my E-commerce page. Namely that I wasnt sure how to go about creating categories, and relating those categories to the products and vice versa. This was extremely taxing, but I finally settled on a way to make this happen that was both intuitive in its design as well as powerful.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; What I was trying to do before was to create a Categories Model, and then in the Products Model, have an array of Category objects. In the Categories model, i'd have essentially an array of Product objects, this was to, for better or worse to try and create a Many-to-Many relationship, my initial thought was each Category could have multiple Products, however each Product should also be able to belong to multiple categories. In doing this there'd be an easy association to help query for products. However, I think i was looking at this in the wrong way. As in, I was trying to create too many associations. Ultimately I ended up scrapping this approach, and instead I changed to how I solved this problem, which was:&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; I now have a Category Object, This category object only serves to create a way to locate associated products, and the relationship is now on the Product, in the Product i have a String field called `category` in this field the admin simply needs to type out what categories he'd like to associate that product with seperated by a space, for example "Bracelets Pendants" the admin can then create these categories from their admin panel, and when you navigate to that page to look at for instance Bracelets. it sends a request to the backend with a regex, to return all products that match that association.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; This is the code that makes it all happen, especially where it defines const category, what this is essentially doing is looking for a query parameter that is passed in from the client, this parameter is a slug created on the category when the admin/owner declares a new category, usually this is a one word association (i.e., Pendants, slug = pendants) what happens then is that query is used to partial search the category field of each product, if there is a match it is returned in the array and sent to the client.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; So the owner can make that association, simply just by adding Pendant, to the product (the search is looking for pendants). The downside to this is spelling errors, which can be a common mistake when adding the product to different categories. I would like to make it, to where on the front-end you simply select category objects, to eliminate such trivialities, however in my current state, im unable to do that. However for now this works like intended, and allows me the ability to progress further with the application. The next step is reports, so the admin can see at a glance their profit margin from month to month, as well as an expenses controller that will allow the owner to detail expenses related to running the store and subtract that from their profits to have a more realistic overview of what they have earned in that month.&lt;/p>

Working hard on this new platform and its coming along swimmingly. However that doesnt mean that its easy.

What to do when you hit a roadblock...

&lt;h1 style="text-align: center;">Roadblock&lt;/h1>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; So a couple weeks ago I decided to engage in a new activity related to programming, I wanted to open my own e-commerce store. I wanted to operate something outside of my normal day-to-day of software development and work, and through my self-learning I had already created an e-comm platform, simple and yet powerful in its design and the best part? DRY. Dont Repeat Yourself. It's a phrase used by Software Developers when developing code, sort of a dont re-invent the wheel sort of thing. You have code that works, so use it...&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; And so i did, using my previous work I started work on my new platform, and so far its been successful. As i was reskinning the site I worked on new features, such as pagination for users, password validations, resetting password links, a good number of items and features that werent present in the first version of the page. However the roadblock comes from one of the features I want to implement. Categories..&lt;/p>
&lt;h3 style="text-align: center;">Where did i go wrong?&lt;/h3>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; Where to begin, the idea initally came from a colleague of mine, he said the initial way to search products was nice, but it felt incomplete, after all, if i was selling X and it wasnt apparent i was selling X, how would he know to search for said item? so he suggested a categories navigation bar that would help group products by a common denominator that you could then search off of. This was a brilliant idea on its surface. Implementing it was something else, but i trucked on.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; To begin i needed to theorize how to handle this on the server, I remembered back to the days where i worked heavily in Postgres about Relational Databases, the Many-to-Many relationships and so on. I wanted to create a model, called Category. in this, it would have a relationship to Products, a M2M relationship to products, and Products equally would have a M2M to Categories. so each Category would have multiple Products, but each Product could also have mulptile categories. This is good because it allows the Admin or owner of the store to allow products to be viewable in more than one category.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; I was able to implement this on the server too, I was able to do all the necessary CRUD functionality and most importantly the functionality to make that relationship between the categories and products. This in itself was a pretty large stumbling block in the programming of this feature, but its not the problem of my roadblock. The problem comes on the Client side of the application. That being i need to make a way in the client admin panel to create a relationship between a product object and a category, and do that reliably. Initially the way i wanted to do this was to create an input field that you could search for categories based on name, and once you clicked on the result it would add that to the array of category objects that the Product has. On the server it takes care of making the relationship to the category. In fact the only time you use the Category object is to search for products related to that Category, and to be honest. There may be a refactor i can make where i wont even be doing that in the future, as I could theoretically just search through all the products for a specific category and return the ones that have that category. However for now, this works, remember DRY.&nbsp;&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; However again, the client is the bane of my existence right now, I dont know of anyway to create that relationship quickly. One attempt i tried failed miserably, and to beat it all, I cant make the relationship dynamic at the moment. I can add the relationship to ONE category, but if i try to add a second one later, it removes the relationship from the first category. and i cant figure out how to make it to where the relationship builds on the last one, and only removes the relationship if i click on the category to remove it. This is the roadblock that has haunted me this week. I will power through it, no matter how long it takes me, though i might end up having to launch the website without the category feature, I will eventually get this working.&lt;/p>

As is with anything, I've hit the inevitable by running up against a Roadblock. 

My Very First Blog Post

&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; Ok, So its not my first blog post, I had a seperate blog, once upon a time in a wordpress site, this was fine for the most part it did the job of a blog container, and it had a really decent wysiwyg editor, however i felt myself lacking as a software developer because the page itself is sort of a wysiwyg editor, and while building and maintaining a wordpress site itself is an art form itself, I've never cared much for them. I wanted to be able to build my own custom webpages, to have full control over the code itself.&nbsp;&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; So I set myself a goal, and that goal was to build my own portfolio page with a blogging component, the process itself was very involved everything down to the layout of the page, to planning the functionality behind the wysiwyg editor. It was also time consuming there were many of times that i didnt know if id actually be able to complete this task. For example, building out the page functionality was simple itself, by the time I got to this point I was already familiar with the concept of a Full Stack page front to back. It was the wysiwyg editor itself that was giving me the greatest confusion. The first one I looked at was TinyMCE a staple of wysiwyg editors, I dont remember at the time of writing why I failed to use it, but I couldnt get it to work, I moved on to other wysiwyg editors, each one more dissappointing than the last. For the most part it felt like I would never get how to build out my own blog.&nbsp;&lt;/p>
&lt;h3 style="text-align: center;">WulfDevPage&lt;/h3>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; So, to my dismay for the longest time, the blog remained unfinished though the rest of the site was complete. It wasn't until just recently that I gave the blog itself another try and was able to complete it, all with &lt;a href="https://www.tiny.cloud/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TinyMCE.&lt;/a> The process this time wasnt as bad as i remember from the first go, I found some really helpful documentation on React integration for TinyMCE and some good Stack Overflow articles, so the process went really smooth. A lot Smoother than my first go at the blog. Maybe its just me, and the fact that everyday, I get a little better at programming than the day before. Completing this blog was a real accomplisment in its own right, and I know i've come a good ways since i started a few months ago, Heck, ive come along way since last year when i really took a deep dive into my learning. In fact, about this time last year i was setting up my &lt;a title="My First Portfolio" href="https://cnfishead.github.io/PersonalSite/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first portfolio page&lt;/a> on github pages, Looking back on that page i can definitely see a huge progress, and i cant help but wonder what my page my look like in the next year or two.&nbsp;&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&nbsp; &nbsp; Anyway, This was just my first blog post, on my own page, with a wysiwyg editor.&lt;/p>

My very first real blog post made on the site, an accomplishment to be sure of, an achievement no less. But a journey all the same. I've come a long way in a year's time, and i could not be happier with the skills I've gained along the way.

Weekend Project

&lt;p>Weekend project. I wanted to challenge myself to build a web app that was functional, and useful in a real-world situation. In my early days of development at the end of a particularly interesting book known as the absolute beginners guide to Python Programming. I then wanted to challenge myself with the knowledge I had gained to create an app. That app was a tip calculator. Now, I realize that calculating the total of a bill isn't exactly something thats in high demand, but that wasn't the point of my project. the point was to design something useful. not needed.. the goal to accomplish is to keep moving forward with my developer skills. Doing so does not necessarily equate to always building large applications that take weeks to build. Some of the best monuments to mankind started out as simple projects that gradually move forward to more complex events.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>Here I will detail some of my thoughts on the creation of the app, Some roadblocks I ran into, shortcomings of the app. In general some technical detail that many people may not find fascinating.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>With this app, my goal with functionality didn't stray to far from the original project, I however did decide since I was using React.JS to create the application to use, useState to keep track of the values inside the fields.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>I set it initial to a complex state object, at first I originally just had a state for each input, I thought that might be the simplest solution in the case of separation of concerns. However, for some reason this led to some unpredictable behavior inside the app.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>For example, when detailing the total, where all state fields had their own useState block, add values together didn't actually add the numbers together. instead it concated, or rather added them together. In the "you should pay: ___" field you would see tip + total (i.e. 20100) if the tip was 20% and the total was $100.00. I cant yet explain why I was running into this kind of behavior. Because the states were saved with various integers or floating point numbers, not strings. This is the first time I've run into behavior like this in React. One might surmise that because each field had a state (See the right side of the vs code) that they are independent of each other, and unable to be added together in such a manner. Perhaps it is that what keeps states from being manipulated by other states.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>Regardless I was able to fix this with using a complex state, honestly I should have done so from the beginning as it is cleaner, more efficient code, but sometimes you need to take the wrong path in order to arrive at the correct destination. Which isnt a bad thing in all actuality. Failures are what drive us to learn from our mistakes. In doing so, we learn more from that then we would have with automatic successes.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>Arguably, The biggest thing I ran into was the functionality of the state object. Once I had fixed my state to function correctly the rest was as they say... history. From there as I already had all functional components working, I just needed to style the App. Originally I wanted to go with a vibrant and more colorful color scheme, but I settled on a more neutral color scheme, it gives it a more functional appeal rather than a pop feel.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>So, its been a while since ive journaled to the site. For those who do not know for the last two months I have been working hard at finding a job. I decided some time ago, that with some 200+ applications in the bag and only 2 interviews that did not go forward that it might be best to ally myself with a recruiting company. Ive known about them for years, honestly theyre a dime a dozen, Revature being the most popular option it seems. However I didn't want to go that route. Companies like Revature while they do tend to get you a job one way or another also tend to short change their developers in terms of pay, work, and location. They force you to sign a 2 year contract that pigeon-holes you into not being able to really enjoy your work, if for some reason you have to part ways with the company you owe them a substantial amount of money, and they essentially bully you into taking the first available job they can place you in your needs be damned.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>For example, As a Husband and father I have more than just myself to think of when accepting a position for work. If i were a single man, with no obligations beyond my current standing a company like Revature would not be such a bad option in a sense. Id be able to pick myself up, and move at the drop of a hat. Though it seems that companies like Revature care little for people of my standing, they have a qouta to fill i guess, and thats fine. though it feels like every other recruiting company follows the same recruitment path. Gather numerous amounts of software developers, give them a basic software developer bootcamp, put them in any position you can find, even if that position is well across the nation. rinse, wash, repeat.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>However I found a bit of saving grace, a company called Cook Systems. Cook, like most recruiting companies in a Revature-esque recruitment strategy is designed to take in New and up comping developers, train them in a specific setup. In my Case we were tasked with learning Java, Spring-Boot, React.JS as well as the obligatory HTML, CSS, JavaScript.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&lt;!-- /wp:paragraph --> &lt;!-- wp:paragraph -->&lt;/p>
&lt;p>So why did I choose Cook Systems? after all, I just spent a minute blasting Revature and Revature like companies, and I did just say Cook was a Revature-esque. Well its simple, really Cook came off different. I knew that aligning myself with a recruiting company would be a beneficial experience to an extent, the one reason that many people choose this route is sort of similar to the idea of attending college. Pay a little more now, to gain an advantage later. However Cooksys (Cook System) was different. From the very beginning of the recruitment I just had a gut feeling, that these guys (CookSys) were not so similar to Revature that I would turn them down. I was contacted by the recruiter, and she was enthusiastically responding to my resume application on a job posting ad that Cook had put out on LinkedIn. Not going into too much detail, but after 200+ applications it had gotten to the point that if I felt like I had the necessary skill to do the job, i just applied for the job without really reading the summary of the job ad. 80% of the time this wasnt a huge issue, as most companies had similar interest. However nonetheless, i was contacted.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&lt;!-- /wp:paragraph --> &lt;!-- wp:paragraph -->&lt;/p>
&lt;p>Immediately I was put off by the experience, Red Flags were shooting up all over the place. I needed a job but I didn't want to fall into a scam. But again, something felt different about CookSys. I could not really put my finger on it, but i did not immediately turn away. Instead what I found was more of a blessing in disguise. As Revature-like as this company was, in the manner of recruiting how they did their recruiting was different. The one major important step was CookSys didn't make their aspiring trainees sign a 2-year long (riddled with rules) contract that forces you into a situation that most people dont want to be in. The major difference beyond that was their drive for quality in their developers and the fact that the Training required is unpaid. So you might think, this isn't a great benefit, unpaid training? you might think to yourself, at the very least youll get paid minimum wage, for something like Revature? right? Trust me, not exactly. There are some things worse than getting no pay, and sometimes thats being locked into an extremely predatory contract.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&lt;!-- /wp:paragraph --> &lt;!-- wp:paragraph -->&lt;/p>
&lt;p>With CookSys I didnt have that, in fact that was one of my major hang-ups with something like Revature was the contract, at the beginning of CookSys's training all you do is sign a simple agreement form that basically states that you are not a Cook employee (at least not yet.) See with Revature, and companies like Revature you are an employee from beginning to end, the entirety of your contract you are an employee of that company, but with that comes certain perks, like a small amount of pay throughout training, and while waiting on placement. but the Cons, such as being placed in an area you might not want to be in, far outweigh that benefit. Conversely with CookSys, your not an employee, they do ask that you give them some time to be placed at a job, but until you are, your not an employee with them. If anything your getting free training.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>Lastly I want to talk about quality control of their developers, large companies like Revature tend to take in a couple dozen developers at a time and move them around, this isnt technically a bad thing, it doesnt have to be anyway. However with CookSys they generally take in a small select number of developers, and they place a high amount of energy into training a quality developer.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&lt;!-- /wp:paragraph --> &lt;!-- wp:paragraph -->&lt;/p>
&lt;p>So I chose CookSys to help me move forward in my life as a developer, and even though as of writing this post I have yet to be placed. (I did have an interview, but no dice yet.) I am extremely humbled by the experience to work along side some great developers over the last two months, getting to know them and building up a network of ever-lasting colleagues to take into the future with me. I know that if I ever run into a situation with software that I might not be able to tackle myself. That these guys will have my back. Regardless of what happens from here on out, I am atleast grateful for what I have learned and the people I have met.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>So, now begs the question... Where do I go from here? What do I do in the interim while I am awaiting job placement with CookSys? I have no doubt in my mind that I chose a great company to work with. And I have no doubt that one way or another soon, I will have that job I so desperately want. However, the training was quint-essentially my job. I developed the projects I was required to, and now, I do not have any. So what to do? I could always buy a learning supplement. Places like Udemy offer great courses, and you can you usually find them for sale. They also have a range of good learning material, everything from game design to app development to database management, heck they even have personal growth courses you can look into. However, I dont know if that is what I want to do right away. For the moment, I believe I will keep it simple, and work on a few small passion projects. An idea, I had the other night was to take and build a tip calculator, I had done so once before in Python at the very early stages of my development journey, which is viewable on my&lt;a href="https://github.com/CNFishead/TipCalculator"> github&lt;/a> its a rather simple development with a GUI, built using Tkinter, however it is an eye-sore, and I believe it has been enough time that i could create a V2 of that project, perhaps using React.JS to do so, it seems, at its face it would be a simple enough single-page application to implement.&lt;/p>

Achievement!

&lt;p>So today, I did one large achievement, yes an achievement. I completed a bootcamp for Fullstack web development from Udemy. Now I know what your thinking, it is just a bootcamp it is not that great of an achievement. Oh, how wrong you are. This is an important milestone, and its a milestone for anyone who completes said courses. See, what many people do not know is late last year, I was displaced from work, while I was working I was taking advantage of a program that allowed me to continue my bachelors degree. Well, once I was displaced I was no longer able to take advantage of that program, and thus only a year away from graduation, I was stopped.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>&lt;!-- /wp:paragraph --> &lt;!-- wp:paragraph -->&lt;/p>
&lt;p>In all honest I knew it was coming, and I fought like crazy to stave off the inevitable. However, I just was not able to save myself from this demise. One of the saddest things about my departure was definitely the loss of being able to complete my B.S. of computer science. Though, I do plan to one day secure that achievement as well itll only take a while longer sadly. However, nonetheless I took this door closing, to look for other open doors. Let me preface this by saying there was a lot of closed doors, and I mean a lot. Fortunately, I did find one eventually. It was in the form of an online bootcamp offered from Udemy, now I took a good look over the course and new from my collegiate material that I would hit this information at some point in time while doing coursework in college. So, it seemed like a good step towards my eventual goal. which is to be a software developer.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>When i started the course I was skeptical as to what it could really offer. I myself, was a bit of a skeptic to how much a bootcamp could supposedly teach you. After all, this isn't a college, I'm not paying thousands of dollars to take this course, what if anything could it offer? and how serious of a learning opportunity would employers even look at it and see any value? well, to the second question I haven't yet an answer, but i was amazed at how much I actually learned from the course itself. Since I was already aware of some programming fundamentals a good bit of it came easy, but did it ever take a turn later in the course. I found myself engaged to the point that i might as well have been learning from a collegiate institution, the course material was easy to understand, but the challenges did get rather challenging.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>one such set of challenges was when i was learning the back-end of development using NodeJS, Express and MongoDB. Databases are rather complex and dealing with them can be confusing if you dont take it slow enough to track what you are doing. However, I loved every minute of it. The challenge of setting up a back-end in development was an amazing experience, and it really brought me closer to understanding the full development cycle that comes in for more popular web applications. There are a many a thing that still remains unclear about that side of development but as a developer I live by the creed.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>Now to those on the outside of the developer spectrum, you might be thinking, "if you dont know anything did you really learn, anything?" because the world and even some employers still have this ideal that you have to retain a lot of knowledge and algorithms to be a useful developer. When in actuality, that could not be further from the truth. Every developer knows that while its good to have knowledge on the forefront and be able to call on it when you need it, the best developments come from researching techniques and algorithms and applying that to your work. For example, I dont need to know off the top of my head how to output a string to the console in C++. I am not a C++ developer first of all, I haven't studied the language. Though, the reason i dont need to know this information, is because I can &lt;em>research&lt;/em> this process and look through the documentation of how to achieve this outcome. Now, I realize this is rather a gross oversimplification, and many developers will know off the top of their head how to output something to the console as it is one of the first things you learn in developing when you start learning a new language. But, this is to tie back into earlier, about many a things still remaining unclear about the back-end of development. I dont &lt;em>need&lt;/em> to know everything there is to know about the back-end of development to be an effective developer. This was concreted in the bootcamp that I partook of.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>Time and time again, we would begin learning a subject, have our challenges and course project, but to do other things, it required me to search through the documentation and research problems to implement the code.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>Thats all I have to say today, It is a rather short response to an achievement, but I wanted to give me thoughts, and my appreciation for the things I did learn, and the practices that I took from this course that I hope to apply further in the future in my work. I think from here, i will try to take a specialization course in a language, something that really concretes a language or two, mostly because I can, but also partly because again, with every language as the quote above says, the more I learn, the more I realize, the less I know...&lt;/p>

Continuing React, A wall, and some hope

&lt;p class="has-drop-cap">Continuing my study of react has been interesting to say the least. It has definitely been challenging in some aspects as some things are not quite clear to me yet as to how certain things are used, and or when to use them. For example, I recently came upon the subject of components and component trees. For those in the know, they know it is a really helpful setup, when building react webpages to use components. For those not in the know about what a react component is, its essentially a small bit of code that you can use over and over again. A good example of something you might use constantly is a navigation bar at the top of your webpage. So condensing the code down into a component that you can call on where ever you need it can be quite a boon to say the least.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>I should point out that in my own study I created a static HTML page to host my personal resume/portfolio, as I am sure many developers have done in the past. Something that I have failed to do in that webpage however is making the code modular. I essentially typed &lt;em>too &lt;/em>much code. For those of my senior, I can only imagine the grimace that just crossed your face. My fellow Jr. Devs are probably smiling right along with me as the realize that they have done the same. So, I am looking at my best example of web development and in the short time since I made the page, I notice its severely over coded and there are many places where I could target items that are being used over and over again to create a better modularized page.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>this is where ReactJS components come into play. The whole point of building apps/webpages in react is to reduce and minimize the amount of code needed to do something. Though some things about components still escape me, such as passing (props) down to the code. Or rather, values to be passed so the code knows what to read. Its more than likely my novice showing since i just started React, and ill likely understand these concepts and how to use them better later, when I have had time to process the information, its just up until that point I was doing extremely well understanding the basic concepts behind what I was learning in the bootcamp. Most things where progressing rather smoothly up until then. Then all of a sudden BAM... wall..&lt;/p>

Ive navigated those, I can navigate this small one. And one of the things I am beginning to realize is that I am not alone. For most of my academic career and self study ive usually only had very few resources to turn to when I hit these blocks, but i saw something the other day that reminded me of the community. It was of a woman who wrote out an iOS app for her daughter, what she had done was great in itself. Though when you look at the comment section the beauty of it was that there was a multitude of developers everywhere from Junior to Seniors basically bombastically asking questions, giving tips, and asking to contribute. Honestly, it gave me a bit of hope. It made me realize that in the end that as a Developer we're all in this together. Even though we may not be &lt;em>technically&lt;/em> colleagues in the sense we work for the same company, we are colleagues in the sense that we are all working towards a goal which is making the world better through code!&lt;/p>

After all, inline styling by convention is sort of looked down upon in the industry as it is in when doing regular HTML. Keeping files separate and making sure the hierarchal structure of the website stays intact is important, especially when learning to maintain a website. As inline styling takes precedence over other styles sheets, you also run into the problem of typing too much, whereas with CSS classes you type out what you want and apply that to the element. In doing so we create a reactive element that will update itself as the time goes on, however this one is a bit different as it will only check the time at the current iteration of the page. Though, if you were on the verge of lets say 8:00pm at 8:00:01 should the page get a refresh, the code will update the style on the page of the time to the appropriate value&lt;/p>

I wished i had remembered that because i forgot to do so at the beginning and spent the next 10 minutes wondering why when i was calling the component it wasn't working.&lt;br>So, to get to the structure of the code, this is simply a file that holds an HTML&nbsp;tag, in the main file (index.js) to use this I would only simply need to call it in the ReacDOM.render() method, it would then render a&nbsp;tag with the text "Hello World". This is a good step to remember in creating React pages, it helps break the code up in sections that are more manageable.&lt;/p>

&lt;p>Moving up to the challenge of the day in the React Module, So for those who do not know, I am currently working through a self-study from Udemy.com for Full stack web development, in this course the instructor likes to give out code challenges, small quizzes of sorts that challenge you on the information presented so far leading up to a major project challenge at the end. For this challenge in particular, I was confronted with the task of refactoring the code into a more industry standard approach. So earlier in the post I showed a section of React code that displayed the time, and changed the color of the output based on what time of day it is. Apparently. this isnt convention for the index.js file, its to crowded, therefore we replaced that with components. However, going further, its convention to place the components the layout per-se of the react app. into another component file usually named App. this .jsx file usually denoted as App.jsx houses the layout of the app, with all the necessary components to make it. so by convention the index. js file should look like:&lt;/p>

Think of a set of Christmas tree lights, if they are wired in series (all on the same circuit) it affects &lt;em>all &lt;/em>other bulbs (or components in our case) causing a total app failure, which might make it hard to narrow down the reason its failing, however if you wire the bulbs in parallel, only a single bulb will be affected if the bulb fails.
